Project Overview

Phoenix’s 35-year Transportation 2050 (T2050) plan dedicates revenue to improving transit service and the street network throughout the city. On Aug. 25, 2015, Phoenix voters approved Proposition 104, which allocated funding to improving access to transit, creating multi-modal options, and supporting economic development.

Between January 2019 and June 2023, the Street Transportation Department undertook its largest and most comprehensive pavement maintenance program – significantly improving the condition of city streets.

The Accelerated Pavement Maintenance Program covers some of the city’s most worn-out major streets (where the asphalt had seen better days, and preventative treatments were no longer benefitting the road).

Between 2019 and 2023, the City of Phoenix milled and overlaid more than 250 major-street milesa 300% increase compared to the number of major-street miles the city usually paves each year.

But, an undertaking like this can intimately impact the lives of thousands – especially residents and small businesses. To propel maximum progress with minimum inconvenience, our team (led by our passionate Public Involvement expert Albert) served as the literal “boots on the ground” to keep lines of communications open and concerns addressed.

What We did

  • Public meeting facilitation, public event support, and canvassing
  • Preparing and distributing notices and main summary reports
  • Collection of public comment through the hotline, email, and public survey
  • Spanish translation and technical writing
  • Collateral development and graphic design

For this project alone, TBCo fielded:

3,501 hotline calls from June 2019 to April 2024.

5,900 survey responses as part of 10 lane change projects alone.

As the saying goes, growth is a good problem to have. As Phoenix mayor Kate Gallego says, “Phoenix was born to grow. …We have stretched our boundaries and reimagined what a modern desert city can be.”Projects like T2050 are non-negotiable in keeping up with the growing needs and demands of the public.

Where there’s growth, look for The Barnhart Co.
